The one way to survive the New York summer heat is with ice cream! My favorite indulgence is Harlem-based Sugar Hill Creamery’s ice cream and I was delighted to capture the fabulous new flavor inventions for summer. Shot by Evi Abeler, New York based Food and Advertising Photographer.

Creative Direction: I collaborated with my local Harlem ice cream spot on a pandemic-safe photoshoot to capture their delicious creations. We set up a socially distanced photo booth in front of their store and had a day of fun with their most committed customers (in 30-degree weather!). Owners Petrushka and Nick supported the shoot on all fronts.

For this dream project for Ben & Jerry’s, we created a series of fun animated GIFs for use on social media. Because we were capturing images for a variety of platforms—Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook—we worked strategically to get the propping and framing just right so that each shot worked across all channels. Creative Direction: My frequent collaborator, the food stylist Kristin Stangl, had a thought: What if we used food to represent the Solar System? That question inspired our self-directed series of images. We researched each planet and the sun, using food and cooking techniques to capture characteristics like temperature, topography and atmosphere. We show the sun as a golden disc of caramelized sugar. Venus, with its volcanic landscape and average temperature of more than 800°F, is represented with a French onion soup topped with molten cheese. Earth is an arrangement of salt-baked fish and lettuces to depict its surface of water and land. We both loved researching and creating this personal project.
